The COM Express Standard for Connectors

COM Express® modules integrate the core functionalities of a bootable PC, such as the CPU, graphics processor, memory, and standard interfaces.
Plugging a COM module onto a carrier board reduces development time and costs. Furthermore, the product lifecycle can not only be extended but also upgraded by plugging newer, higher-performance COM Express® modules onto the carrier board.

PICMG Colibri Connectors for COM Express

Our Colibri SMT connectors for COM Express applications feature an optimized contact design, allowing for straightforward implementation of high-speed connector applications at 10, 16, or 25+ Gbps and beyond. Our simulations demonstrate excellent signal integrity—even at high data transfer rates. I am absolutely convinced of the high-speed capabilities of our Colibri COM Express connectors. You should take a look at the features yourself and order at least one sample! You can also request
S-parameters from us for simulating your own designs."

FAQ: Questions and Answers About the Colibri SMT Connector
What data transfer rates are Colibri SMT connectors suitable for?
Simulations using the Colibri® COM Express® connector system at 8 and 10 Gbit/s demonstrate excellent signal integrity. Through further developments and improvements to the contact design, the high-speed capabilities of the Colibri plugs have been extended to 25+ Gbit/s. This makes the COM Express connector system the top choice for your application requiring high data transfer rates of 25 Gbit/s and above.

For which high-speed applications are Colibri® connectors used?
Colibri high-speed connectors are ideal for high data transfer rates and are therefore suitable for any type of high-speed application. These include, for example, COM Express and Mezzanine board-to-board systems with data transfer rates for 10 Gigabit Ethernet and PCI Express Gen3.
Where are PICMG-compliant Colibri® connectors already being used successfully?
Among other applications, Colibri® COM Express connectors are already used in industrial automation, kiosk and POS systems, medical technology, measurement technology, gaming, transportation, and building automation.
Is an assembly aid required for processing Colibri High Speed connectors?
The design of the Colibri® receptacle provides sufficient suction surface area for the aspiration pipette and therefore does not require any additional loading aid. The
Colibri® plug can also be reliably loaded using a narrow aspiration pipette without the need for an additional loading aid.
Are PICMG Colibri® connectors also available in tape-and-reel packaging?
Yes, Colibri SMT connectors are typically supplied in tape-and-reel packaging, which enables fully automated pick-and-place processing. Upon request, they can also be supplied in tray packaging.
Are Colibri COM Express connectors UL-recognized components?
Yes, ept's Colibri® connectors are UL-recognized components in the United States and Canada.
Are ept PCB connectors RoHS-compliant?
RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances) is the directive restricting the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
We confirm that Colibri® connectors from ept are compliant with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, as evidenced by the RoHS certificate. For more information, please visit RoHS & REACH.
Testimonials
However, we unconditionally guarantee the authenticity of these statements.
In applications with very high data rates, the Colibri 10 Gbit/s occasionally reached its limits; however, with the new Plug 16+, USB 3.1 Gen 2 signal transfers now work without any issues.
For us, the decisive factor was that ept’s COM Express connectors delivered the best performance in the eye diagrams (jitter, eye height, and eye width).
By using tape-and-reel packaging for Colibri® connectors, we were able to increase the autonomous operation time of the placement machine and thus reduce production costs.
For our 10Gbit/s application, we have approved only Colibri connectors.
Since we started using Colibri High Speed connectors, we haven't had any problems with wetting during reflow soldering.
The tape-and-reel packaging of the Colibri® SMT PCB connectors has significantly increased productivity in our manufacturing process.
The support provided by ept during the introduction of Colibri® connectors into our production process was excellent. We felt we were in good hands.
At ept, the availability of Colibri® connectors is guaranteed. That was extremely important to us.
